In Kubrick's work, first scene always matters. In this case, a
group of newly enlisted guys have their hair cut. Men are homogenized within the macho
military culture, their brains symbolically get prepared for washing, individuality is lost.
Ironically, only before the end, is it revealed, that the deadly vietnamese sniper, is not
but a young girl with long hair in braids. The pair of hair clippers (proper for sheep
shearing) embodied for me, all this sense of violence.
